Responding to Hurricane Harvey

Hurricane Harvey made landfall on the Texas coast as a Category 4 storm on August 25. Damage from the storm and from subsequent flooding is widespread. It will take months, if not years, for many places in and around Houston to recover from the devastation. As Christians who love our neighbors (Mark 12:28-31) and who seek the welfare of our country (Jer. 29:7), we must respond with gospel-centered service to those in need. We can demonstrate the love of Christ by meeting the physical and spiritual needs of those affected by Harvey through prayer, giving, and going.

Pray to the sovereign LORD of all creation asking for the flood waters to recede (Matt. 8:27).

Pray for those affected by the flood who have lost their homes and possessions not to despair but to seek first the kingdom of Christ where the things needed for life will be provided (Luke 12:22-31).

Pray for those still stranded in their homes that God will provide for their physical deliverance and preservation (Matt. 14:30-31).

Pray for those who are grieving because they’ve lost loved ones, suffered injuries, or lost their possessions. Pray that the LORD would be a source of comfort and hope to them (2 Cor. 1:3-4).

Pray for all responders working tirelessly to rescue people. Pray for their endurance. Pray for wisdom as they face many formidable and, perhaps, unknown challenges. Pray for the Lord to provide as many people as are needed to meet the area’s needs (Matt. 9:35-38).

Pray for the gospel to be proclaimed and visibly displayed through the church’s service. Pray that many people affected by the storm would hear the gospel, see the gospel on display, repent of their sin, trust in Jesus as LORD, and find eternal joy through this momentary affliction (Matt. 5:16, Romans 10, Matt. 13:44).
